Happy Spring! The buzz around the first day of spring in Minnesota is amazing.
Although the weather may not literally be any different outside, somehow the sun shines a little brighter and the air carries a sweet smell that gives us hope. Just magical. It's also now socially acceptable to daydream of little sprouts and seedlings, go shopping for seeds and tools we will need when planting time arrives AND most importantly eat asparagus.
In preparation for spring, I finally signed up for my first CSA share! An action I had meant to do so many seasons before. What is a CSA? Wonder no more, my friend! a CSA stands for "Community Supported Agriculture". It is a share purchased directly from a farmer or a group of farmers that supports them throughout the growing season. In return, you get fresh and local produce of all shapes, sizes and colors!
It's like your very own personal farmer's market, delivered right to your neighborhood! There were many options to explore in the Twin Cities area. I ended up going through Growing Lots Urban Farm, which is a 1-acre CSA garden right in South Minneapolis.
Check out CSA's you can get involved in this
season by going to http://www.localharvest.org and clicking "find CSA"
Nothing quite compares to eating fresh and local. Bonus - it's a lesson in our local seasonal foods. Some we may be familiar with, others... not so much. Stay tuned to my blog to keep up to date on the CSA goodies!
